Roots-N-Blues Festival

The Roots-N-Blues-N-BBQ 10th Anniversary; poster, branding, and apparel design, is one of my favorite projects I’ve had the pleasure of working on. The lineup included a variety of artists in the folk, rock, and blues genres including, The Avett Brothers, Nathaniel Rateliff, Jason Isbell, G Love and the Special Sauce, Blues Traveler, Shovels & Rope, The Devil Makes, Three, Ben Folds, Sam Bush, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, and many more.

Concept: The idea for this branding comes from a guitar that was given to me by a friend. He had acquired the guitar while working around Dallas, TX. One night they were at a bar and wanted to play some guitar, so they headed over to the pawn shop and picked up a used Montana guitar that had some random stickers on it for $35. After he gave it to me it continued to acquire stickers from various shows, restaurants, and destinations.
Coming into the project, I felt that most festival posters stuck to a rigid hierarchy of bands in order of their pay rate by font size. I wanted to equalize that hierarchy but retain the importance of the headliners through the use of the band stickers on the guitar.

Metrics:
The Roots-N-Blues Festival was hosted at Stephen’s Lake Park in Columbia, MO. The events started on Friday evening and ended on Sunday evening. The shirts featuring the poster design were sold out by noon on Saturday, showcasing the tremendous turnout and affinity for the design. The 10 year anniversary became the largest Roots-N-Blues Festival to date.

A replica of this guitar was produced for the festival weekend and used to generate social media content, as well as commemorating the festival’s 10th Anniversary.
